The Virgin Monastery of Raifa (3-4 hours)

The Great Bulgars (10-12 hours)
Bolgary (formerly Bolgar, Bulgar, or Bolgary Velikie) is an ancient city and capital of the medieval state of Bolgariya Volga-Kama. The ruins of medieval Bolgary are near the present village of Bolgary, Tatarstan republic. Archaeological excavations on the site of the city began in 1870. The earliest settlement on the site of Bolgary dates to about ad 500. In the second half of the 13th century, Bolgary became the most important trade and craft centre of the Golden Horde. In 1361 Bolgary was destroyed by the Golden Horde khan Bulak-Timur.
Now the Bolgar Preserve includes:
- archeological museum, located in the 18th century church;
- monuments of Muslim masonry like Cathedral Mosque, Small Minaret, Khan’s Tomb, Khans’ Baths
- ruins of the Suvar Settlement
In 1998 the Bolgar historical and architectural comlex was included in the UNESCO Preliminary Word Heritage List (waiting list).

Yelabuga (12 hours)
Yelabuga (also spelled Alabuga or Elabuga) is a town in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, located on the right bank of the Kama River and 200 kilometers (120 mi) east from Kazan. The history of the settlement dates back to the 11th century, when a Volga Bulgarian border castle was established. The castle was later abandoned, and its remains are now known as Saytan qalas? (Shaytan's castle or Devil’s castle).The city is famous for the grave of Russian Amazon cavalier-woman Nadezhda Durova, the birthplace of painter Ivan Shishkin and oil industry.
Yelabuga is also known as a place where Russian poet Marina Tsvetayeva committed suicide in 1941. The poet is buried at the municipal cemetery. Yelabuga is closed to the Nizhnyaya Kama National Park that you might visit also.
